In the aerospace sector, neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets have achieved domestic substitution and application.

In the process of localizing the production of aerospace equipment, another breakthrough has been achieved in key materials. China's independently developed high-performance neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets have recently been successfully applied to the attitude control system of a new generation of carrier rockets, realizing the domestic substitution of core magnetic materials in this field and breaking the long-term reliance on imports.

The aerospace sector imposes extremely stringent performance requirements on NdFeB magnets, demanding stability across extreme temperatures ranging from -60℃ to 150℃, corrosion resistance exceeding 1,000 hours, and a magnetic performance decay rate of less than 0.1%. Previously, domestic high-end magnets were heavily reliant on imports, resulting in not only high procurement costs but also supply chain security risks.

After three years of technological research, the Institute of Materials, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, has pioneered the preparation process for nanocrystalline composite magnets. The developed 28SH grade NdFeB magnets boast an energy product of 42 MGOe and a coercivity exceeding 20 kOe, with all indicators reaching international leading standards. These magnets have been successfully integrated into critical components such as the attitude adjustment motors for BeiDou navigation satellites and the solenoid valves in the propulsion system of the Long March 7 rocket. Following 12 in-orbit tests, their performance stability has demonstrated an 8% improvement over imported alternatives.

In the commercial aerospace sector, the application of domestically produced NdFeB magnets has reduced costs by 40% compared to imported products, contributing to a 15% decrease in the constellation networking costs for a commercial satellite company. Currently, five domestic magnet enterprises have obtained aerospace-grade quality system certifications, with an annual production capacity exceeding 800 tons, sufficient to meet the magnet demands for nearly a thousand satellites and 50 carrier rockets.

Industry experts state that the breakthrough in the domestic substitution of NdFeB magnets provides material support for the development of high-thrust rockets, reusable spacecraft, and other equipment. It is projected that by 2026, the localization rate of NdFeB magnets used in China's aerospace sector will reach 90%, further elevating the self-sufficiency and controllability of the aerospace equipment supply chain to new heights.
